Atom, Part II

 

Intel is supposed to unveil its second Atom chip, the one for low-cost PCs and so-called netbooks – along with the Atom-optimized Diamondville chipset that’ll make the thing a netbook platform – at Computex Taipei, which starts Tuesday June 3. 

Atom-bearing MIDs that use the Silverthorne chipset are also expected to debut; the Atom the MIDs are based on has been shipping for over a month now.

Meanwhile, DigiTimes thinks Intel is going to start churning out pin-compatible dual-core Atoms in July, uncomfortably close perhaps to the single-cores and squeezing traditional entry-level CPUs. 

The paper has the dual-cores down for 1.6GHz, Hyper-Threading and thermals of 16W, up from 12W for the single-core.

Wachovia thinks Intel could sell five million of the cheap Atoms in 4Q08.
